It took longer than expected, but Tuesday marked a big day for a trio of former Maryland baseball stars.
Pitcher Ryan Ramsey, outfielder Troy Schreffler, and outfielder Chris "Bubba" Alleyne were all drafted on day three of the 2022 MLB Draft. With all three an integral part of Maryland's program-setting 48-win season, the last time more than two Terps were taken in the draft was back in 2017 when the Terps had five selections.
The Kansas City Royals selected starting pitcher Ryan Ramsey in the 13th round, making him the first dirty Terp taken in this year's draft. Ramsey, who was a junior this past season, led the Terps to 11 wins, second in school history in a season. In 92.1 innings pitched he had 90 strikeouts, earning himself first team All-Big Ten honors this past season. The junior also ended up throwing a perfect game against Northwestern back in late April, only the second in school history and first since 1959. Ramsey also sits sixth all-time in the record books with 17 career wins and becomes the first former Terp drafted by Kansas City.
The Philadelphia Phillies selected outfielder Troy Schreffler in the 15th round. Schreffler, the Pennsylvania native, was also coming off of his junior season where he earned third-team All-Big Ten honors. He had a career-high in batting average at .340, as well as career highs in every possible batting statistic. He finished the season third in school history in doubles in a season, as well as fourth in at bats, and fifth in runs scored and hits in a single season as well. He becomes the first Terp selected by the Phillies since Zach Morris was a 24th round pick back in the 2015 draft.
The last pick came in the 19th round when the Los Angeles Dodgers selected OF Chris "Bubba" Alleyne in the 19th round with the 585th overall pick. Alleyne, a fifth-year senior, was the Big Ten player of the year as well as a first team All-American. Alleyne holds the record for most home runs in a single season (24), as well as most at bats in a single season (264) for Maryland now. He also is second in school history in RBIs, runs scored, and extra base hits in a single season. In the career record books, Alleyne finishes second in runs scored, and extra base hits as well as third in home runs. He capped off his career as a 2022 Golden Spikes semifinalist and becomes the first Terp selected by the Dodgers since 1990.
Maryland also picked up a pair of transfers in TJ Brock and Nate Haberthier weeks ago, but Brock will now have a decision to make after being selected in the sixth round by the Toronto Blue Jays. In 51 appearances during his four seasons in Columbus, Brock posted a 5.68 ERA and 90 strikeouts while finishing with 11 career saves. He also led the Big Ten last season with nine saves and pitched 16.2 innings, initially filling a key need in the Terps' bullpen.
While Ramsey, Schreffler, and Alleyne were drafted, one big Terp name that wasn't picked was first baseman Maxwell Costes. The Baltimore native earned third team All-Big Ten honors this season. He was coming off a season where he hit a career-high 16 home runs and also drove in a career-high 52 runs. Costes finished his career second in school history in home runs (40), and walks (116), as well as third in school history in runs driven in (145). Costes still has one year left of eligibility thanks to the NCAA ruling the 2020 season not to be counted towards eligibility, so if he wants to come back for a fifth year like Alleyne did, he will be able to.
After monster seasons from all three, look for them to work hard in the minors and try and find a spot on an MLB roster in the future while head coach Rob Vaughn will now await a final decision from Brock.
